...Vernet, I know she's related to the paint...
[Sherlock pauses]
Oh. The other Vernets.
no subject
[And he'll pause here, mostly for drama.]
....Yet, there was something else I found about them - the reason for their decline.
no subject
[a beat]
I will need to start clarifying soon enough, and the reason for their decline...?
no subject
[He's pretty sure sherlock would get annoyed if he started asking about that now, of all times.]
There is a certain...bloodline trait the Vernets have - in fact, the head of their family must always possess it, and they have not had a head of the family for almost 2 centuries.
[....Another pause, because he's a shitlord like that.]
no subject
[His eyes slowly widens]
Twins?
no subject
[He hands over another piece of paper - this one recounting testimonials of the Vernet family heads.]
Every Head of the Vernet family was a Twin, yes...but, that was not the only difference.
Every single one of them...Had twice the magical capacity of a normal human. While the other twin is often not talked of - it appears that they were either adopted out or ...disposed of, all of the twins I would track down shared another trait peculiar to the line.
....Sherlock. You....cannot use magic. Correct?

Nothing that isn't innate for a Vampire.

When he'd found this, he'd practically had to go and stew for a while on it. On how cosmically unfair all of this was. How, just because of chance and genetics, he'd literally been a criminal from his very conception.
No wonder it came so easily to him, in the end.
Still, Sherlock has the right to know - and he places a hand on his own chest, directly on top of his still heart.]
...That is because I have your magic. The secret of the Vernet bloodline....is something akin to in-utero parasitism.
[He takes in a breath, before resolutely speaking.]
One twin will steal the other's magic during development, and be born with twice the magical capacity. This often leads to the other twin being born stillborn or fatally deformed, and if they do manage to avoid that...then they have no magical capacity. In short...they are a normal human being.
...And there is only ever one set of the Vernet twins alive at one time.

First - don't take blame for a literal freak chance.
And I see - since we did not "die" in the right sense, they had been stagnating after that.
[Sherlock pauses, thinking over what it meant beyond adding more to Moriarty's issues with his sense of self and identity]
no subject
[It's...a joke, but a very, very self-depricating joke.]
And..yes, that appears to be the case. Because we still exist, the Vernet family has been getting ever more desperate.
...Perhaps they were already showing the signs in your encounter back in 1920?
no subject
[Now, they would be all for it]
no subject
...were you there to see them in person?
['....if so, what did they look like?']
no subject
I caught him early... they were still developing, like fetuses... though now I wondered if he had been more vigilant in covering his tracks.
no subject
[It would be fruitless, anyway - as long as they existed.]
...Still, that isn't the whole reason as to why it took me so long to get this information.
I was...attempting to learn if it would be possible to transfer back the magic I stole from you.
no subject
[He blinks owlishly at that]
no subject
[He flusters, just a little.]
It isn't as if I need all of this magic, after all! And besides, you know more of the workings of the mage world than I do!
no subject
[He puts a hand over his face]
Just... this is a lot to take in.
no subject
...It's....certainly been quite a year, hasn't it?
[So much of their lives have changed....after years of it seeming the same.
Everything is different now, and that itself is almost terrifying.]
...Do you - regret it?
[This year. Their discoveries. Everything.]
no subject
So much... it's been so much... but...
[Sherlock trails off, softly, before standing, closing the distance]
I don't regret finding the truth... about us. Or breaking down the walls we had.
no subject
Actually makes him smile, gratefully, before nodding himself.]
...I feel the same way. I - suppose I just needed a bit of assurance that it was still the case...how embarrassing for an old man like myself.
[After everything he keeps finding...but, well-]
Hopefully, this should be the last...major revelation about our origins. Barring anything else.
...I also believe it might be a good idea to stay away from the Vernets whenever possible.
no subject
I cannot imagine what else would come up for our origins... and I am sure now that I said that something will come out to prove me wrong.
